Congratulations to Reid Russell, a NCS 6th grade student and St. Jude patient, who had artwork submitted and chosen to be published in the 2018 St. Jude “ABCs of Cancer” book. The art on the pages of this book are displayed prominently on a gallery wall at St. Jude. Each letter of the alphabet illustrates a personal story of struggle, strength, and support of St. Jude patients.
Reid was diagnosed at age 7, while in Mrs. Parker’s second grade class with rhabdomyosarcoma, a tumor located between his brain and left eye. He went through a year and a half of treatments and it was while he was doing treatments that he drew and wrote his letter “e- is for emotions”. We are thankful Reid is now in remission but does go every six months for scans as a St. Jude patient.
Reid and his family and friends have a team in the St. Jude Race every year. They are all doing the 5K tomorrow as part of “Reid’s Jedi Council: A Force of Hope”. (His team t-shirt is shown with Mrs. Parker).
Head of School, Mr. Jim Ferguson, congratulated Reid for being published in the book. But he went further in saying, “I am most proud of you for being an encourager to other kids and families dealing with cancer. Your words, (and all the words and pictures in this book), have an impact on other cancer patients. You are making a difference and making a bad situation better by helping others find hope and support.”
We are proud of Reid, and all our students who have been/are St. Jude patients. We pray for continued good health for all our student patients. We are also thankful for all members of our NCS Family who are running in the St. Jude Marathon/Race this weekend. You are all heroes running and raising money and awareness for St. Jude.
