Northpoint Wins Wild One at FACS
Northpoint went on the road to Cordova last Friday night and pulled out a 31-30 division win over First Assembly Christian School. With the win, the Trojans (4-1, 2-0) remain atop the Division IIAA-West standings, a half-game ahead of Lausanne and University School of Jackson.
FACS drove into Trojan territory twice in the early going, but Northpoint stopped the Crusaders once on downs and again with a blocked field goal attempt. After the second stop, Trojan quarterback Zac Montgomery dashed 75 yards up the middle for a touchdown. Wade Martin’s kick put the Trojans up 7-0 midway through the opening period. After an exchange of punts, FACS put together a drive that ended with a 32-yard field goal to cut the Northpoint lead to 7-3 early in the second quarter. After another exchange of punts, Kyle Brewer sprinted 71 yards for another Trojan touchdown and a 14-3 lead. FACS countered with a touchdown pass late in the second quarter to pull within 14-10 at the half.
Northpoint was first on the scoreboard in the second half. Jorden Flowers tackled the Crusader punter after a bad snap, putting the Trojans in business at the FACS 36. Several plays later, Montgomery scored on a six-yard run to extend the lead to 21-10. The Crusaders sandwiched two long touchdown passes around a nifty 17-yard touchdown pass from Montgomery to Brewer to make the score 28-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
FACS took its first lead of the game with 8:17 to go in the fourth quarter. However, the Trojan defense blocked the extra point, their third blocked kick of the night, to keep the score 30-28. The ensuing Northpoint drive featured a heavy dose of senior running back Holt DePriest, including a 40-yard run that pushed the ball deep into Crusaders’ territory. Ultimately, the Trojans settled for a 28-yard Martin field goal for a 31-30 lead with 3:13 remaining. A big third-down pass deflection by Justin Jones set up a critical fourth-and-ten for the Crusader offense at their own twenty-yard line, and their fourth down pass was complete but out of bounds. Fittingly, DePreist put the finishing touches on the key district road win with a first down run, after which the Trojans were able to run out the clock and seal the victory.
Northpoint’s scheduled game for Friday, September 22, against Sacred Heart of Jackson, Tennessee, has been canceled, providing the Trojans with an open date preceding homecoming against Harding on September 29. Northpoint’s original bye week (October 20) will now feature a match-up with Memphis Academy of Health Sciences (MAHS).
