Trojans Finish with Winning Season

Northpoint’s varsity boys closed out the 2016-2017 season with a final record of 13-12, accomplishing one of the team’s goals of a winning season. Included in the win total was a pair of down-to-the-wire victories over district rival Memphis Catholic. Individually, Lance Diaz was named first-team all-district, and Timothy Durham and Tim Vissia received honorable mention. As a team, this year’s version of Trojan basketball will be remembered for its gritty, determined play.

Varsity Boys Close Regular Season, Prepare for Regional Action

Northpoint dropped a 35-25 decision at home to FACS to close regular-season action Friday night. With a record of 13-11, the Trojans now head into regional tournament play with a road game against Sacred Heart of Jackson on Monday night at 6:00. The winner advances to play Lausanne on Tuesday.

Trojans Drop Back-and-Forth Affair to Harding

The Northpoint boys fell to district rival Harding at home on Tuesday night, 57-54. The teams swapped the lead throughout the game and the Trojans, down seven late in the game, cut it to three with four seconds left but were unable to regain possession. Northpoint is 13-10 overall and faces FACS in the last regular season game at home on Friday night for Senior Night.

Northpoint Boys Pick Up Road Split

Northpoint’s varsity boys went on the road Tuesday night to pick up a thrilling 36-35 district win over Memphis Catholic before falling at Lausanne on Friday night, 67-52. Matthew Enders scored a go-ahead layup with 20 seconds left to provide the margin of victory against Catholic. With the district split, the Trojans are now 13-9 overall and 2-6 in district action. They play their final two regular-season games at home this week against Harding on Tuesday and FACS on Friday (Senior Night).

Trojans Drop Nail-Biter at ECS

The Northpoint varsity boys jumped out to a quick lead at ECS on Friday night, then had to rally in the second half to give themselves a chance to win the district matchup. A flurry of steals late in the fourth quarter saw the Trojans cut the Eagle lead to one, but that’s as close as they would get. Timothy Durham and Lance Diaz tallied 12 points each as Northpoint fell to 12-8 (1-5).

Northpoint Splits Early-Week Pair

The boys basketball team split a pair of games early this week, trouncing Macon Road 63-29 at home on Monday night and falling on the road to FACS on Tuesday night, 53-34. The Trojans are 12-7 overall, 1-4 in district action.

Diaz Drops 21 But Trojans Fall on Road

The varsity boys basketball team built an early advantage over district rival Harding Friday night behind the hot shooting of guard Lance Diaz but ultimately fell 52-39. The Trojans held a lead throughout most of the first half before Harding was able to bounce back for the victory. Northpoint is now 11-6 (1-3) and will return to action Monday as they host Macon Road.

Varsity Boys Drop District Matchup to Lausanne

Northpoint put up quite a battle in the first half against a very athletic Lausanne squad but eventually succumbed 52-38. Several times in the first half, the Lynx seemed to be ready to take command, but the Trojans battled back, taking the lead on several occasions. Northpoint dropped to 11-5 (1-2) on the season.

Northpoint Takes Overtime Thriller Over Memphis Catholic

Northpoint and Memphis Catholic put on a show for the large crowd gathered for homecoming on Saturday night, with the Trojans pulling out a 40-39 victory in overtime. Northpoint fell behind 7-2 early but allowed only six points the rest of the half in claiming a 20-13 lead behind Lance Diaz’s four first-half three-pointers. The Chargers came out strong after halftime to retake the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans rallied to lead late before Catholic hit a big shot to send the game into overtime tied 37-37. A Matthew Whiting layup and a Matthew Enders free throw were enough offense in the extra period to give Northpoint (11-4, 1-1) its first division win and ninth of ten overall.

Trojans Return to Winning Ways Against Macon Road

The Northpoint boys basketball team bounced back from Tuesday night’s tough district opener to rout Macon Road, 64-18, Thursday night. With the win the Trojans improve to 10-4 on the season and have won eight of their last nine.

Varsity Boys Drop District Opener to ECS

Northpoint fell to ECS in their district opener on Retro Night in Trojan Hall Gym, 44-40, in a hard-fought game by both teams. The Trojans started out hot after a pair of three-pointers by Matthew Whiting and built a 12-8 lead after the first quarter. Falling behind by as many as twelve in the final frame, the Trojans mounted a furious comeback that fell just short. The loss snapped Northpoint’s eight-game winning streak at dropped their record to 9-4 (0-1).

Trojans Take Eighth Straight with Win over Black Knights

Using a barrage of three-point plays–both from long range and the conventional variety–Northpoint defeated West Memphis Christian, 53-20, on Manley Court on Tuesday night, January 3. The Trojans hit seven three’s from behind the arc and added a couple of three-point plays and Lance Diaz’s four-point play to win their eighth consecutive game and run their record to 9-3.

Northpoint Takes Pair at Kirk Invitational

Northpoint went 2-0 in the Kirk Invitational holiday tournament to run their record to 8-3 on the season and extend their winning streak to seven. The Trojans used a smothering second-half defense and hot shooting from Lance Diaz to down Pillow Academy, 52-32. In the second game of the tournament, Northpoint trailed Hartfield Academy for most of the first three quarters before taking the lead on back-to-back baskets by Connor Rowan and Timothy Durham to start the fourth en route to a 50-44 triumph.

Trojans Sweep Series from Tipton-Rosemark

The Northpoint varsity boys jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back in a home win over Tipton-Rosemark, 52-42.  The Trojans led 19-7 after the first quarter and were never seriously threatened as they won both games in the home-and-home series with TRA.

Varsity Boys Take Fourth Straight, Defeat Fayette

Northpoint won a back-and-forth affair over Fayette Academy at Manley Court on Friday night, 46-43, to claim their fourth straight win. Tim Vissia scored 16 for the Trojans, and Drew Fabrizius gave his team the lead with a free throw with under a minute to go. After a week off for final exams, the Trojans (5-3) host Tipton-Rosemark at home on Friday night, December 16.

Trojans Beat Trezevant for Third Win in a Row

The Northpoint varsity boys jumped out to a quick lead and then came from behind with a dominant fourth quarter to knock off Trezevant, 56-45, on Manley Court Thursday night. Lance Diaz hit three first-quarter three-pointers and finished with 18 points. Northpoint hit seven threes on the night. The Trojans, now 4-3 on the season after winning three straight, host Fayette Academy on Friday night.

Big First Half Propels Northpoint to Second Straight Road Win

The Northpoint varsity boys basketball team jumped out to a 40-14 halftime advantage Tuesday night at Tipton-Rosemark and never looked back, taking their second consecutive win on the road with a 57-44 win. Timothy Durham poured in 21 points and Lance Diaz added 17 as the team evened its record at 3-3. The Trojans return home for back-to-back games against Trezevant (Thursday, 7:30) and Fayette (Friday, 7:30).

Trojans Take Road Win Over Franklin Christian

Northpoint’s varsity boys basketball team rode a dominant third quarter to a 53-29 victory at Franklin (TN) Christian on Friday night. Up by ten at halftime, the Trojans sprinted to a 39-15 lead by the end of the third quarter, holding Franklin Christian scoreless in the period. During the overnight trip, the Trojans enjoyed bowling together, attending the Lipscomb-Tennessee State basketball game, and serving with Northpoint ministry partner On the Go Ministries. The Trojans return to action Tuesday night at Tipton-Rosemark.

Varsity Boys Take Tough Road Loss at St. Benedict

Lance Diaz banked in a three to give the Northpoint boys basketball team an early lead, and Tim Vissia completed a traditional three-point play for a late first-quarter lead, but St. Benedict proved too much for the Trojans, taking a 67-47 victory. Timothy Durham had a big second half and led Northpoint with 16 points. Vissia and Diaz added 11 and 8, respectively. Northpoint (1-3) travels to Franklin Academy for a Friday night tilt before undertaking a service project in Nashville on Saturday.

Northpoint Falls to Chiefs Despite Furious Comeback

The boys basketball team, down 10 to Magnolia Heights at the beginning of the third quarter, stormed back to take a late lead before succumbing to the Chiefs, 54-47. The Trojans showed tremendous tenacity on defense from the start, drawing two quick charges. The team would draw five such charges on the night, none bigger than Timothy Durham’s with just under five minutes to go in the game. Magnolia Heights was able to withstand the Trojan comeback to take the win despite a flurry of fourth quarter threes and an enthusiastic student section for the home team. Lance Diaz had 16 points to lead the Trojan offense. Northpoint (1-2) returns to the hardwood on Tuesday night, November 29, at St. Benedict.

Trojans Rally Late, Fall to Margolin Academy in OT

The Northpoint varsity boys basketball team lost on the road Margolin Hebrew Academy Memphis 70-68 in overtime on Saturday night. Down by nine at the half, the Macs drained three successive three-pointers early in the second half to extend their lead to 18. Tim Vissia led a furious fourth-quarter Northpoint comeback effort. Timothy Durham’s turnaround three from the top of the key sent the game into overtime, but Margolin was able to hit key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Vissia led Northpoint with 23 points. Lance Diaz had 19. The Trojans return to their home court with a record of 1-1 as they take on Magnolia Heights on Monday, November 21.

Varsity Boys Open with Big Win

The Northpoint varsity boys basketball team opened their season at home on Tuesday night, November 15, with a convincing 46-11 win over Tunica Academy. Lance Diaz rode hot shooting early to a game-high 16 points in the win. The Trojans return to action on Saturday, when they take to the road to play Margolin Hebrew Academy.
